The Complete Guide to Sliding Glass Doors in Florida

If there's a single architectural feature that defines Florida living, it's the sliding glass door to the lanai. But not all sliding doors are created equal — especially when hurricane season is involved.

2-Panel vs. 3-Panel vs. 4-Panel

Sliding glass doors come in configurations that describe how many glass panels make up the total opening:

  • 2-panel (XO) — The most common residential configuration. One fixed panel, one sliding panel. Standard widths from 5' to 8'.
  • 3-panel (OXO) — Fixed panels on each side, sliding panel in the center. Good for wider openings with a centered view.
  • 4-panel (XOOX) — Two fixed and two sliding, often meeting in the middle. Creates a large, dramatic opening for indoor-outdoor living. Widths of 12'–16'.

Impact Rating for Sliding Doors

Sliding doors present a unique engineering challenge because they have to seal tightly enough to resist hurricane pressure while still sliding smoothly in daily use. Quality impact-rated sliding doors use heavy-duty stainless steel tandem rollers, multi-point locking systems, and laminated impact glass — the same interlayer technology as impact windows.

For Pinellas County, all replacement sliding doors must be impact-rated under current code. We install doors tested to ASTM E1886 and E1996 standards.

Maintenance Tips

  • Clean the track regularly — Florida's environment deposits salt, sand, and organic material in tracks quickly. A stiff brush and warm water every few months prevents roller damage.
  • Lubricate with silicone spray — Never use WD-40 on sliding door tracks. It attracts dirt and damages the rollers over time. Silicone spray is correct.
  • Check the weep holes — Small holes in the bottom track allow water to drain during rain. Make sure they're clear.
  • Test the locking hardware annually — Multi-point locks should engage smoothly. If they don't, the door may need adjustment.

When to Replace

If your sliding door requires significant force to open, won't lock properly, shows visible gap between panels when closed, or is not impact-rated, it's time to replace. A new quality sliding door installed correctly will operate smoothly for 20+ years with routine maintenance.
